My name is Heloísa, I’m a PhD student at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (Brazil), where I research the genomics and morphology of the deep-sea cutthroat eels family Synaphobranchidae. My goal is to better understand the phylogenetic relationships within this family using phylogenomics methods with exon markers, as well as to advance the integrative taxonomy of the genus Synaphobranchus through molecular and morphological data. I am particularly interested in the geographic distribution of Synaphobranchus species and am looking for tissue samples from around the world.
At the 17DSBS, I will present an oral talk on DNA barcoding results of deep-sea fish collected in Brazilian waters, based on the abstract “Molecular Assessment of Deep-Sea Bony Fishes: New Findings from the Western South Atlantic,” which is part of my master’s thesis defended last year. These results include new sequences, new species occurrences, and new species. Additionally, I will present a poster on Brazilian women in deep-sea science, discussing the profile of scientists in Brazil, as well as the challenges and prospects for women in academic careers.
