Dive Deeper Research Bursaries 2019 Awardees

The Society is delighted to announce the receipients of the Dive Deeper Research Bursaries for 2019: Dr Laetitia Gunton and Dr Arunima Sen.

Dr Laetitia Gunton, Chadwick Biodiversity Fellow, Australian Museum

Laetitia Gunton is a Chadwick Biodiversity Fellow at the Australian Museum Research Institute, Sydney. She is currently investigating the deep-sea faunal biodiversity around the coast of Australia, describing new annelid species and documenting their distribution and connectivity using morphological and molecular techniques. To date Laetitia has identified over 300 and sequenced 125 of these deep-sea polychaetes from the eastern Australian abyss. Laetitia will use the Dive Deeper Research Bursary to visit the Museums Victoria, Melbourne, where a large collection of material is available. She will work alongside Dr Wilson to identify and sequence specimens from the North and West of Australia, as there is currently a data gap for these areas.

Dr Arunima Sen, Postdoctoral Reseacher, Nord University, Norway

Arunima Sen is a postdoc at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture of Nord University and has established one of the first and most developed lines of research regarding Arctic cold seeps. Her research focuses in frenulates at Arctic seeps, which tend to be the dominant community members. Arunima intends to use the funding from the Dive Deeper Research Bursary to process bioinformatic data in order characterise and understand the functioning of frenulate symbionts. Arunima will visit and spend time in Dr. Stéphane Hourdez lab at the Observatoire Océanologique de Banyuls, France, in order to receive training and become proficient in bioinformatic processing.
